Answers to the most common questions about notary public services, apostille certificates, antenuptial contracts, and document legalisation in South Africa.

General Notary Questions

What is a notary public?

A notary public is an attorney admitted by the High Court after passing additional examinations. A notary can notarise documents, administer oaths, and prepare documents for international use — functions a commissioner of oaths cannot perform.

What is the difference between a notary and a commissioner of oaths?

A commissioner can witness affidavits and certify copies for domestic use. A notary can do everything a commissioner can, plus notarise documents for international recognition and prepare documents for apostille. Full comparison →

Do I need to visit your office in person?

For some services (signatures, life certificates), yes. For document legalisation, you can courier documents to us. We advise on whether an in-person visit is required.

What is an apostille?
